Getting the Most out of The Book of Mormon

I love the Book of Mormon. I have always known that it was true. I have read it all the way through multiple times. I have always wanted to know what the perfect scripture study method was. So, I have been searching for the best way for someone to read the Book of Mormon to get the most out of it. I have learned that the best way to get the most out of the Book of Mormon is to read it. Then read it again. Then read it for a third time. Then read it again after that. Continue reading this book until you have it memorized. It does not matter how you go about reading it, as long as you read it.

Recently, I have had the desire to get a brand new Book of Mormon and mark it a certain way. I felt like this would help me pull new concepts out. I looked and looked for a way to mark it. There are so many wonderful ways that I plan on trying eventually but the one way that I felt would help me the most right now is the Three Times Then Write. I found this on Pinterest. The original post can be found at www.theredheadedhostess.com. I love this way of marking and I cannot wait to dig deeper into The Book of Mormon.

Here's how it works:
Grab a new Book of Mormon. This will help you find new favorite scriptures, new lessons and just new things that have not jumped out to you before. Also, my other scriptures are pretty marked up so it gives me a chance to start with a clean slate. You will also need some type of marking utensil.

This is how your pretty new Book of Mormon should look before you begin. You are going to read the same section (I go by chapters) three times.
The first time I read it through I used the color green to mark. I underlined somethings that stood out to me and noted a footnote that I hadn't noticed before and I wrote some thoughts. In 1 Nephi 1:1 on the footnote taught I never realized it said "Education; Family, Children, Responsibilities toward; Family, Love within." As I thought about this I thought about how it is a parents responsibility to teach the children but it is the children's responsibility to learn. In a family we are suppose to learn and grow together and each of us have a responsibility to our family.
Look at this! I'm already learning!
My second time through I used orange to mark. I also use red for things I really like. I was amazed at how much I had missed the first time.
The third time I read this section I marked in purple. This time was still shocking at how much more stood out to me. The deeper we dig the more we find. I have read this section the most because I start a million times but I have only finished a handful of times but the point is no matter how many times we read it we will always find something new.
Time to write. We often learn even more when we start to write. So now is the time to write what you have learned. I am a journal fanatic so I have a million journals for certain things. This is my scripture journal and I love having a journal just for my scripture study because I can look back to when I read this same section and see what stood out to me when I read it the last time. It doesn't matter where you write it just write it down. I promise it is worth it.

The Book of Mormon is amazing and will always teach you something but don't forget to enhance your study with a prayer before and after. Inviting the spirit into your study will teach you things you may have never pulled out yourself. It's just amazing what the spirit can do.

I know this church is true and I know that The Book of Mormon is true and Joseph Smith really did translate it. I know that if we will study this book we will be blessed and it will enhance our lives. I also know that Thomas S. Monson is a true and living Prophet today. I know that our Father in Heaven and Savior know and love us. I love this gospel and am so blessed to be brought up in it.
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
